Rooted in Love: Weaving the Magic of the Seasons and the Wheel of the Year into Your Wedding

Weaving the seasons into your ceremony can enhance the magic and connection of your union

There is something deeply grounding about the turning of the wheel of life. Whether it’s the first brave snowdrop of spring or the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke in autumn, nature reminds us that every beginning has its own unique rhythm.

As a celebrant who lives for eco-friendly, whimsical, and nature-inspired ceremonies, I believe your wedding shouldn’t just take place in a season—it should feel like a part of it. By honouring the "Wheel of the Year"—the ancient seasonal festivals—we can create a ceremony that feels timeless, connected, and authentically you.

Have a look through these festivals and rituals - you might recognise them in some our our more modern traditions and celebrations, but maybe the meaning and origin of the story has been forgotten in our collective memory. How many do you recognise?

1. Spring: Ostara & The Great Awakening

In the pagan calendar, the Spring Equinox—or Ostara—marks the moment day and night are in perfect balance. It is a season of "The Great Awakening," ideal for couples who view their marriage as a fresh start or a blossoming adventure.

  • The Ritual: An Egg Blessing or Seed Planting. Eggs represent potential and new life. You might exchange a hand-painted wooden egg or plant wildflower seeds in a pot of local soil. As the seeds sprout, so does your life together. (Easter Eggs, anyone?)

  • The Vibe:  Pastel colours, primroses, and symbols of fertility and balance. Think willow branch arches and "living" aisles.

2. Early Summer: Beltane & The Fire of Love

As we move into May, we hit Beltane, the festival of fire and fertility. This is arguably the most romantic "spoke" of the wheel, celebrating the union of two people in love and passion. It’s a high-energy time for couples who want a celebration full of fun and playfulness.

  • The Ritual: Handfasting & The Maypole. Beltane is the traditional time for "Greenwood Marriages." We can use ribbons in vibrant reds and whites to tie your hands together, or even involve your guests in a mini-maypole dance to weave your community together.

  • The Vibe: Hawthorn blossoms, flower crowns, and leaping (safely!) over a small "balefire" or the lighting of a candle to symbolize purifying the past and moving forwards into the future.

3. High Summer: Litha & Radiant Abundance

The Summer Solstice, or Litha, is the peak of the sun’s power. Celebrated towards the end of June on the longest day, it’s the ultimate season for meadow weddings and woodland celebrations under the bright, everlasting sun.

  • The Ritual: A Sun-Honey Toast. Use local honey or mead to toast to a "sweet" life together. You might also include a "Ring Warming," where your guests pass your bands around to infuse them with the warmth of the summer sun.

  • The Vibe: Sunflowers, barefoot moments, and ceremonies that last long into the golden hour.

4. Autumn: Mabon, Samhain & The Heart's Harvest

Autumn is a sensory feast of gratitude. Mabon (the Autumn Equinox) is about thanksgiving, while Samhain honours our roots and those who came before us.

  • The Ritual: An Ancestral Libation. If you want to honor loved ones who are no longer with us, Samhain-inspired ceremonies can include a "silent table" or the pouring of a drink into the earth to acknowledge your lineage.

  • The Vibe: Burnt oranges, deep ochres, and the use of seasonal fruits like apples and pumpkins to decorate your altar.

5. Winter: Yule & The Return of the Light

Beyond the sparkle and noise of Christmas, Winter is the moment when we acknowledge the earth hibernating and the stillness that accompanies that. It's a moment of deep, inner reflection. While the earth sleeps during Yule, your love for each other provides the warmth. Winter weddings are for the dreamers—they are a time for stillness and deep promises.

  • The Ritual: The Yule Log or Candle Spiral. Symbolize the "return of the light" by lighting a central unity candle. It's the perfect time to speak deep and reflective vows to each other for the year, and life, ahead of you, perhaps as part of a handfasting. You could even sign your certificate on a decorated Yule log that you later keep in your hearth.

  • The Vibe: Evergreen boughs (holly, ivy, and pine), velvet textures, and the magical

glow of lanterns against the winter dark.
