For many couples and families, a dog isn’t just a pet — they’re part of the family, part of the story, and very much part of everyday life. So it makes perfect sense that more people are choosing to include their four-legged companions in their ceremony.
Whether you’re planning a wedding, vow renewal, or even a funeral, a dog-friendly celebrant ceremony can be relaxed, joyful, and wonderfully personal — especially here in Worcestershire and Herefordshire, where countryside venues and outdoor spaces lend themselves beautifully to pet-inclusive celebrations.
Why Choose a Dog-Friendly Ceremony?
Couples often tell me they want their ceremony to feel:
True to who they are
Relaxed rather than rigid
Family-centred (and yes, that includes the dog, cat or event the pony!)
A dog-friendly ceremony:
Reflects real life and real relationships
Helps everyone relax (dogs are brilliant ice-breakers)
Creates unforgettable, often heart-melting moments
And as a celebrant, flexibility is at the heart of what I do — which makes including pets much easier.
Lovely Ways to Include Your Dog (or cat, pony or other pet!)
There’s no pressure for your dog to “perform”. Inclusion can be gentle and low-key.
Some popular (and realistic!) ideas include:
🐾 Walking down the aisle
🐾 Acting as Ring Bearer
🐾 Sitting nearby during the ceremony
🐾 Being mentioned in your ceremony wording
🐾 Appearing for photos rather than the full ceremony
Often, the simplest option is the best — especially for nervous or excitable pets.
Choosing a Dog-Friendly Venue
Not all venues allow dogs, so it’s worth checking early. Thankfully, Worcestershire and Herefordshire have some wonderfully relaxed, pet-friendly options.
Some of my favourite options are:
Bennetts Willow Barn, Worcestershire (a gorgeously unique festival wedding venue)
The Barn at Drovers Rest, Herefordshire (a fabulously fun and alternative venue)
Stourport Manor Hotel, Worcestershire (an elegant and traditional wedding venue)
The Fleece Inn Bretforton, Worcestershire (a gorgeously quirky barn venue in the grounds of an historic National Trust-owned pub)
Just to note, policies can change, so always check directly — but many venues are increasingly open to dog-friendly ceremonies, particularly outdoors.
Planning for Your Dog’s Comfort
A calm dog, cat or other pet makes for a calm ceremony.
Things I always suggest thinking about:
A dedicated pet handler – this could be one of your guests (but definitely not you or your partner!) or it’s possible to hire a pet sitter for the day. Just ask and I can recommend!
Fresh water, shade, and breaks
Familiar toys or blankets
Noise levels (music, applause, confetti)
Timing — shorter ceremonies often work best
And just as importantly: a backup plan. If your dog decides today is not their day, that’s absolutely fine.
What If It Doesn’t Go to Plan?
Here’s the truth: dogs and pets are unpredictable — and that’s part of the joy.
A wagging tail, a curious wander, or a well-timed bark often becomes a favourite memory rather than a “problem”. Celebrant-led ceremonies are designed to roll with these moments, not fight them.
And if your dog needs to step away? That’s okay too.
How I can Help Make It Work
A celebrant-led ceremony with me offers flexibility you won’t always find elsewhere.
As your celebrant, I:
Adapt the ceremony flow to suit your dog or pet
Build in pauses and relaxed timing
Set expectations gently for guests
Include your pet naturally in the wording
Keep the atmosphere calm and welcoming
It’s never about perfection — it’s about meaning.
Is a Dog-Friendly Ceremony Right for You?
A dog-friendly or pet-friendly ceremony works best if:
Your dog, cat or other pet is comfortable around people
You’re relaxed about small interruptions
You have support on the day
You want your ceremony to reflect real life
If that sounds like you, it can be a truly special choice, so let's book your Discovery Call to chat more.
Final Thoughts
Including your dog, cat or other pet in your ceremony isn’t about being quirky for the sake of it — it’s about honouring the relationships that matter most.
If your dog, cat or pet is part of your family, your story, and your everyday joy, there’s something really lovely about them being part of one of life’s most meaningful moments too.
If you’re planning a dog-friendly ceremony in Worcestershire or Herefordshire (or other pets, for that matter!) and would like to explore how to include your pet in a calm, thoughtful way, I’d love to chat.
